Spinning the Muses
Apparently it was only a matter of time before spinmeisters of the Academy used their talents to elevate to an academic discipline for study by the young the gutter ramblings of rap singers and the maunderings of Hollywood political scientists such as Barbra Streisand.
Brown University is planning a conference on "Ethnomusicology and Musical Advocacy." The conference, according to one description, seeks to encourage "dialogue between ethnomusicologists and community members about applying ethnomusicology to tangible and useful projects in both the national and international communities."
Presumably Brown’s "ethnomusicologists" will not be spending much time on Peter Tchaikovsky for his "musical advocacy" of Czarist Russia in the 1812 Overture or even Julia Ward Howe’s commentary about “the coming of the Lord” and stamping on all those grapes. “The Minstrel Boy” probably won’t make the syllabus, either.
