NBC and Baghdad Pete Spin Quickie Divorce - Chapter II
What do you call giving aid and comfort to the enemy in a TV interview on state-operated Iraqi TV?
If you are ex-NBC correspondent Peter Arnett, it’s a misjudgment. But he made clear the misjudgment was to be interviewed on Iraqi TV – not what he said.
If you are NBC, where originally it was merely professional courtesy, it became, after a flood of public outrage, only personal opinions. But NBC said it was, well, you know, wrong to air them on enemy TV. Therefore, as NBC thought about it, Baghdad Pete was told to seek new career opportunities. No need to tarry. Go away now.

An NBC News spokeswoman has earned the spinmeisters award of the week for assuring listeners not to be concerned about MSNBC Special Baghdad Correspondent Peter Arnett’s aid and comfort to the enemy interview on state-run Iraqi TV.
Arnett, a darling of the Blame America First Club, told Iraqi TV that America’s initial war plan had failed and that his TV reports of civilian casualties and the resistance of the Iraqi forces were helping those who oppose the war. In other words, Baghdad Pete was telling his Iraqi minders that he was an asset in aiding Saddam Hussein and Allah fight the Great Satan.
NBC News says not to worry: the interview was impromptu and merely professional courtesy– spinspeak for aiding the enemy is OK as long as it is off-the-cuff and a matter of good manners.
