Only an Uppiity Hispanic Would Call a Tabula Rosa a Tabula Rasa
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and his liberal left allies think Miguel Estrada is a “stealth candidate” for the federal bench and not sufficiently Hispanic. Now the Senator has come up with some fresh negative spin: he contends that Estrada is not a “pink table.”
Here’s an exchange from the hearings unearthed by the Newark Star-Ledger:
Schumer: "I am not asking you for the quality of the legal reasoning. I am asking you -- you have certain predispositions -- we all do -- no one is a tabula rosa. Let me just read you a quote."
Estrada: "Rasa."
Rasa? Schumer was not to be put off by any uppity Latin talk about “blank tablets.” Apparently, Schumer meant “rosa” because he repeated the malapropism in the next few minutes.
Or possibly, he also wanted to demonstrate that if Estrada were the kind of “real” Hispanic whose vote Schumer seeks he too would think that a tabula rasa is a tabula rosa. Or possibly tabula rosa is neo-spinspeak for a pinko tablet on which only liberal-left thoughts are permitted.
