Spinspeak Enrichment Log
Two wartime specimens from opposite ends of the political spectrum:
a little smacky-face = CIA cutespeak for what your average Saddam Hussein inquisitor would regard as a relatively mild inducement to a terrorist murderer to talk.
citizen activist = self-righteous upsidedowntalk for anti-American pathological treasonous behavior that would result in early demise in any of the tyrannies being supported; phrase much used by “Hanoi Jane” Fonda to seek subsequently to justify her aid and comfort to Communist military forces during the Viet Nam War.

Spinning Away from the Mother-of-all-Battles II
As we move through the daily chatter about why best not to attack Iraq right now, but maybe tomorrow, maybe next week, well, maybe next year, here are some real-world definitions for piercing the fog of spinspeak:
broad based coalition = peacenik Potemkin-villagetalk for the United States fighting a war while cheered on from afar by a hodgepodge of UN layabouts, Third World kleptocrats and powers such as Angola, Cameroon and Guinea as opposed to having merely Britain, Spain, Italy Australia, and some 30 other allies
inspections are working = unadulterated fuzzball for a UN get-out-of-jail-free card most acceptable to oil interests in France and ex-Communist bureaucrats in the former Soviet Union.
no immediate threat = bravebabble for just turn over and go back to sleep; those bearded fellows seeking bombs and bacteria are only followers of the religion of peace.
Arab Street = diabolictalk beloved by Arabists, peaceniks and chronic appeasers for teaming souks inhabited by millions of crazed Muslims: a peace-loving group of truly good folk who, in reaction to any move by the U.S. in its national interest including feeding Muslims and spreading democracy, is ready to rise up after nodding though the last three or four centuries and run amok.
